What to Expect from the Engagement Session with Me

What to Expect from the Engagement Session with Me

An “engagement session” is simply a couple’s photo shoot to commemorate a very special time in their relationship. It also allow me an opportunity to get to know you and your fiancee, how I work, and posing tips I’ll give you so wedding days will go smoothly. The photo session is entirely up to the couple in regards to what they want out of the shoot; Such as, props, locations etc.  It can range from a few simple photographs, to multiple locations or wardrobe changes. Again, it’s entirely up to the couple and their vision for their special day. Be sure to gather ideas through blogs, bridal magazines or the Knot.com and communicate efficiently with the photographer about your vision.

Brides and grooms, more than ever can customize their wedding to the tee. With apps such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Instagram, it’s best to utilize this. I recommend setting up a Pinterest mood board with comments on the pictures of what you like and share it with me. It comes in handy for both the photographer and the couple when discussing the types of poses, and setting. Pin, repost and gather as much information in regards to props, idea or theme as possible.

Props help bring out the personality of the couple. Again, the best thing to do is to scour the internet for ideas or bring things that the couple enjoys. A simple monogram picture frame, an inside joke, or a stuff teddy bear can all work.

My suggestion for clients when it comes to wardrobe is to avoid bold, and distracting colors or patterns. This usually overpowers the scenic views and can cause a “is it white/gold or black/blue” moment. At times, the camera sensor picks this up as a “moire” effect. Examples can be found by searching up the term on “Google.” As long as the couple understands the effects that the outfits can have, and understands the possible outcome, ultimately it is the couple’s choice.

I usually bring an assistant for a shoot. An assistant will help us carrying lighting equipment to make sure there are no harsh sunlight in the face, setup lighting equipment for nighttime photography, and help carry purses/bags/dresses, etc

I find that many couples can be camera shy and modeling for photos can make them quite uncomfortable. I’ll try my best to find the best lighting, scenery and poses that emphasize your strength. I want to show a picture that portrays the couple being in love. I will even model for you (female and male poses) if the looks is not what I had in mind.

Please note that the location is entirely up to the couple. Certain locations require a permit that range from $25-150 and hour. This permit may take days or weeks to get, depending on the municipal. This cost is passed onto the couple. Therefore, if the couple finds that the location is exactly what they want and don’t mind the fees, it’s advisable to choose something that is within reason for the couple.

After the shoot, I’ll culled photos for you and rejecting test shots and weird facial expressions. This ensure you won’t be overwhelm with hundred of images to go through.  The proofs will be upload to an online gallery where you can easily view and click on an images to set a favorites list for me to edit. I do extensive editing to make sure the pictures come out as great as it can be to achieve my vision. I do remove unwanted things and people in the background. I’ll also do retouch (eyes, bad skin, shiny hair, etc)  for canvas, album order. The turnaround from the engagement session to the edited pictures, usually take around 1-2 weeks depending how soon you get back to me on your favorite list.
